COME OUT AND PLAY!
The Makapo Aquatics Project was founded in 2007 to meet the recreational needs of the blind community in Orange County and beyond. Our programs involve the Polynesian sport of outrigger paddling, which is the perfect sport for those with little or no vision since there are no special adaptations to the equipment. It is an inclusive, unique activity in which blind people can do with their sighted family and friends.
OHANA Videos
Watch a video documenting Makapo's collaboration with Mark Baldwin a PhD Candidate at UC Irvine. With Mark's help, Makapo was able to create a remote control system for one-person outrigger canoes (OC1s) and successfully use it in a race.
